New school in Kuhmo is divided into three parts giving a feeling of safe scale and a village-like communal spatial experience. By dividing the program into three parts we had an opportunity to create an intermediate scale between nearby existing historical buildings (acting as a museum) and the city.
In the middle of these wooden blocks we have inserted light shafts that accentuate the central space and circulation between classrooms.
Structure is made of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and will be a spearhead in developing wooden educational buildings in Finland and the Nordic environment. BIM was utilized in all design phases.
The building was nominated for the Finlandia Prize for Architecture.
